Sitting down to write my column I look at my calendar and see that I have no shows or interviews scheduled for Feb 2013. This is kinda nice; this will give me more time in my basement studio to work on my own shit which I have been neglecting terribly. It’s the same feeling I get when I haven’t sketched or painted a picture for a while. I get moody, irritable, jumbled brain ache symptoms. I call it “creative blue balls”, and damn mine are about to burst!

It’s been way too long since I played a live show so I need to wrap up this new album. I’m the worst procrastinator I know and way too picky. A couple of weeks ago, my dear talented husband called me down to the basement to listen to some music he had recorded. He put a pen and paper in front of me and said, “You are going to write the rest of this song, right now off the cuff.” And that’s what we did, and it turned out awesome. Maybe that’s my problem, instead of over analyzing and over thinking things and anticipating how something will end up sounding, I just need to get my arse in the moment and get it done. It felt good, I enjoyed it.

I guess we all have a process to what we do, but it’s good to step out of your comfort zones. I always felt like my lyric/melody writing was super private, cleverly constructed and technical by locking myself in a room until it was done. But I know that you can still produce something great on the fly. Plus the recording process itself always produces new ideas no matter how you approach it and the surprise of that makes me jump up and down like a little kid. This new project is probably some of the best music and musicians I’ve ever worked with, I can’t wait to get it done!

Since my last column I have made it through Christmas, sickness, sick kids, you know the normal day to day Mum stuff. Our Shockwave Christmas party was cool; Vince gave me a badass copy of Houdini by The Melvins on vinyl. My son Cam kicked arse playing drums with The Excentrics at Todd Wright Annual Santa Clausterf@#! At Jammin’ Java in VA. Next up was the Salad Days craziness at Black Cat (see article). I cried for my Redskins, yep sorry Baltimore, I’m not a Ravens fan, but that’s nice for youJ. I heard the Jimmie’s Chicken Shack Reunion at Rams Head was off the hook and I had a blast hosting my girl Eva Jade Landon’s CD release at Sidebar with Mikey Rocha. I was super impressed with the other bands who I finally got to see play, Victims of Experience, Frenamie and More AM than FM. A GIRL POWER night for sure! Be sure to check these bands out! Mikey pretty much stole the show though in his grass skirt and coconut bra!
