LeciaI first heard about Lecia Louise in March 2011 when she blew out the votes in a “Discover New Artists” contest on College

Underground Radio, a global internet radio station chain. Lecia Louise is not your typical Australian artist. She is a versatile guitarist/songwriter who composes music that can best described as alternative rock.

This year Lecia is releasing the re-master of her album 'Into Being' which has been added to a number of radio stations in the USA and Australia.

We caught up with her packing to leave for a concert tour beginning in London.

What Musical Genre Do You Feel Best Describes Your Music And How Would You Describe Your Sound?

Alternative blues rock with a hint of jazz/groove

How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?

My Mum made up my name 'Lecia'. She also made up my middle name 'Louise' which I use as my last name when performing as my last name is quite long and hyphenated. 'McPhail-Bell'

What Are or Have been Your Musical Influences?

When I first started playing guitar my step father showed me Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, amongst others in his record collection. I loved the rockin' guitar so much and when my sister got a guitar for her 16th birthday, I got to play her guitar and learn the tunes I loved from these artists as well as bands such as Nirvana and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. After this time, my first guitar teacher showed me Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson, George Benson, Steve Vai, Eric Clapton and Santana amongst others. I was then besotted by Joshua Cunningham's open string acoustic guitar style of playing from the Australian band 'The Waifs'. In high school I loved Muse. I currently love many styles of music; as long as it is good music :-) I love music from Gotye, James Blake, NIN to Ausioslave.

What Are You Working On Now? Any Future Collaborations We Can Look Forward To?

I am working on putting my next EP together. I have released a couple of singles over the past couple of years which will appear on my next EP. They are called 'Individual' and 'For you'. Last week my producer Jeff Lovejoy worked on mixes for 2 new songs of mine which are rock guitar orientated. One in particular has a long 'shredding' solo :-)

I am up to the final song on the EP which I have been recording myself on Logic for about 7 years. Working on this song gave me RSI about 4 years ago and stopped me from playing and recording for a couple of years. I have slowly been overcoming this injury and getting back into playing and recording.

What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry? What Is Your Plan Of Action?

I wish to complete an album once I have released my EP. I want to upgrade my home recording gear, keep travelling for inspiration, and collaborate with some different styled musicians. I would like to learn some new techniques on guitar, keep practicing singing and composing music and performing rock concerts :-) It would be nice to earn enough money through music sales to buy some new recording gear :-) I also wish to help others entering into the industry however possible, particularly female musicians, being that it is a male dominated industry,

What Is Your Favorite Track To Perform Live?

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus far?

Having RSI (tennis elbows) in both of my forearms caused great physical pain and stopped me from playing guitar and music all together. I could not brush my teeth, drive or get dressed without pain. My recordings ceased and I cancelled a string of gigs, including a tour to Holland. This eventually turned into depression. I eventually got out of this dark spiral when playing with my duo partner at the time, Lani. Over a couple of years I tried playing guitar bit by bit; still with pain, but my pain threshold has been slowly growing.

What’s Your Typical Songwriting Process?

If I am alone in a new place, or waiting for someone, or feeling very relaxed with people I know and trust, I sometimes zone out in a meditative state and play as if no one can hear me. I let the guitar take me away and I might sing melodies and certain feelings might come to me coinciding with the melody and mood of the song. Lyrics take a little longer. I record most of the process, either on my phone, ipad, computer or note book. A song couple take anywhere from an hour to years. 'Red Ribbon' form my album Into Being took a few years to

write whereas 'This Moment' took 2 hours.

How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?

I can hear new music in an instant. I ask people on FB what music they like and I check it out and see if I like it (Which I am doing as I write this interview). In regards to my own music, I get to see positive feedback from people I know as well as strangers on my music or gigs. I can also talk with other musician on FB and get tips on gear and recording etc. Social media gives more people access to my music so they can hear what I do, and hopefully they like it, and maybe one day they might buy my music or come to a show :-)

What Are Some Tracks and Artists Currently On Your Playlist?

Gotye, Diesel, Jarryd James, Joe Bonamassa, Cheryl Crow, Jeff Beck, Muse, James Blake, Michael Jackson, Sade, Sara Bareiles, LeBelle

What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?

Went to school, played in the backyard and rode horses :-) I wanted to be a physiotherapist or a massage therapist. Then guitar took over in high school :-)

Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?

Be willing to learn as much as possible. Be patient. Be realistic. Take many sacrifices. Stay focused. Don't be led astray. Stay inspired. Hang around positive people. Say yes I can instead of no I cannot.

What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?

Find more funding to give artists more freedom to create and learn and not have to work a job as well as be a full time musician. Close the gap between the highly successful artists and emerging artists. Have songwriting workshops to collaborate high calibre musicians with emerging artists.

How Do You Feel About Originality?

Everyone is different. Most people probably feel odd or different. We should embrace originality and difference.

Is There Anything Else We Should Know About You Or That You Would Like to Add?

I am passionate about music and have good intentions for all people. We are lucky to have this life so let’s make the most of it and push our boundaries and achieve our personal successes we all deserve.
